At FME, we’re proud to support our long-standing clients with specialist civil engineering and mechanical installation projects – tailored to suit even the most demanding industrial environments. One recent job saw our team carry out the full civils and installation work for a new conveyor pit system, from initial groundworks through to the finished structure.
This project involved four distinct phases: site preparation, excavation, steel framework installation, and final completion. Our multi-disciplinary team delivered every element in-house – ensuring a streamlined build and minimal disruption to the client’s operations.
Phase 1: Before – Site Preparation and Planning
Every successful job begins with the groundwork – and this project was no different. Our team carried out a thorough pre-start review, assessing access, ground conditions and key safety measures. The work area was carefully marked out and isolated, ensuring full compliance with health and safety regulations from the outset.
This preparatory phase also included the setup of temporary welfare facilities, ground protection measures and planning for waste removal – all of which are standard practice for FME on jobs of this nature.
Phase 2: During – Excavation and Groundworks
Once the area was secure, our civils team began the excavation phase. Using compact and mid-sized diggers, the conveyor pit was excavated to precise depth and width specifications, with all spoil safely removed from site. Our operators are all CPCS-certified and experienced in confined and complex digs.
As part of our commitment to safety and quality, temporary supports were used to ensure ground stability throughout the dig – preventing collapse and protecting our crew as well as surrounding structures.

Phase 3: Steel Frame and Installation
With the pit dug and prepped, our fabrication and installation team took over. A prefabricated steel framework was carefully positioned into the pit, forming the base for the conveyor structure. All work was carried out to tight tolerances, with mechanical fixings and concrete backfill ensuring a solid, durable finish.
This turnkey approach – from fabrication to install – is what sets FME apart. It reduces delays, improves communication, and gives clients peace of mind knowing one contractor is in control throughout.
Phase 4: Completion and Handover
The project was completed with the surrounding area reinstated and the pit fully operational. Site clearance and finishing touches were carried out to our usual high standard, and the completed job was handed back to the client – on time, on spec, and ready to use.
