When you run a busy transport hub, damaged concrete isn’t just a cosmetic problem — it’s a daily disruption and a safety issue. That’s exactly what our team helped solve at a large haulage depot in Preston this month, delivering a reinforced concrete repair that’s built to last.

This was no quick patch job. The section in question needed a full dig out, two layers of reinforcement mesh, and precision dowel jointing to make sure it could stand up to the weight and movement of articulated lorries and daily forklift traffic.

Precision Dig Out with Safety Front of Mind

First, the area was sectioned off and broken out with a mini digger. All broken concrete and debris were removed from site, with full consideration for vehicle movements and depot operations continuing around us. Working in live yards is something our team does week in, week out — and safety is always the priority.

The exposed area was carefully shaped and prepped with new shuttering, making sure the edges were clean and square, ready for a proper reinstatement.

Dowel Edge and Dual Mesh Reinforcement

To ensure long-term durability and crack resistance, dowel bars were installed at each edge of the pour. These bars allow movement and load transfer across the joint — a must for areas seeing constant axle loads and turning traffic.

We then installed two layers of reinforcement mesh, tied off and raised using spacers to make sure it sits at the right depth. This kind of attention to detail is what prevents early cracking and keeps reinstatements solid for years.

Concrete Poured, Finished and Ready for Use

The reinstatement was poured using high-strength concrete, levelled, and brush-finished to match the surrounding yard. As always, we ensured the joints were properly tooled and sealed, preventing water ingress that could cause early deterioration.

The job was completed with minimal disruption and handed back ready for use — another example of how FME delivers end-to-end civils and concrete work with no fuss.
